11 Features iOS 14 copied from Android!!

iOS 14 was announced at WWDC 2020 developers conference on 22nd June with a dozen of new features. But Apple didn't say when it would be officially launched, saying that it would be this autumn. However we expect iOS 14 to release to the public between 14 to 18 September 2020.

While iOS 14 brings up most exciting iOS update, we can't help but notice some features that are copied from Android.

Android and Google are known to get inspired by each other's operating system. For example Apple copied quick setting toggles from android and called it Control Center while Google copied gesture navigation from iOS.

HERE ARE 11 FEATURES THAT IOS 14 STOLE FROM ANDROID:

1. WIDGETS ON HOME SCREEN:

Widgets have existed in iOS for a while, but they have been to the left most page. But now Apple has allowed them to be placed alongside app of the home screen. Widgets come in various size and shapes and now you can place as many or as few you want.

Apple also created a new "Smart Stack" widget that automatically displays widget based on the different time of the day. While that's something we haven't seen in android before, but the concept of Home screen widget existed on Android from the very beginning.

2. APP DRAWER:

Based on your usage iOS 14 shows dynamic suggestion of apps.
Well Apple calls it the "App Library", but it is the same basic idea. The App Library lives on the far right of your iOS 14 home screen and it groups all of your installed apps in smart folders. You can also use the search bar to find any specific app, if you don't feel like going through the pre-defined groups/folders. Also iOS 14 allows you to hide apps on your regular home screen, further giving a Android experience.

3. PICTURE IN PICTURE

If you are a Android user, you might be familiar with the picture-in-picture(PiP). Being able to play any video on home screen in a small window is something we have from Android 8 Oreo. iOS 14 finally bring in this feature. You can move the PiP window around the screen no matter which app you are using. You can watch other videos or view video calls even when you are using other apps. However, iOS 14 allows you to adjust the size of Pip player, that should make our day to day experience better.

4. WIND DOWN MODE:

Wind Down mode has also been introduced in iOS 14, is the exact same name that Google uses on android. Google introduced it on android devices with Android 9 Pie. It turn's screen into grey color mode and it is a part of Google's Digital Wellbeing tools. However with the release of Android 11 Google renamed it to Bedtime mode.

5. SMALLER CALL UI:

iOS 14 brings a smaller call UI that brings that appears toward the top of the screen, like a banner notifications and it offers a option to reject or accept a call. You can navigate around the whole UI on your Iphone when the incoming call notification is being shown. This feature has been present on android for a long time though and Apple certainly due inspiration from android.

6. APP CLIPS:

Back in 2017, Google launched the initial test of Android instant apps- a way to run lightweight apps and games without installing them. App clips are smaller than 10 MB in size, so they almost launch instantaneously. Just tap a button and you have instant access to a lightweight version of fully-fledged app. App clips can be launched by scanning NFC tags, tap a web link or dedicated App Clip codes or QR codes. This functionality was first introduced in Android 4 years back. However we can see Apple implementing it in a better way by integrating more features such as Apple Maps, Apple Pay and Messages.

7. NEW SIRI DESIGN:

Earlier, Siri used to take up a considerable area of the screen. It was fine, but it completely took out of what you were doing it previously. However with iOS 14, Apple offers a compact UI overlay when you summon Siri. It pops up with a small indicator on the bottom that lets you interact with Siri and also keeps you on the same app or website that you were using previously. It is much more similar approach to what it looks when you trigger google assistants on an android phone.

8. TRANSLATE APP:

Google has a lot of excellent services/apps and Google translate has been one of them. It has proved to be one of the excellent tools and help you to communicate with people that don't speak the language you do. Apple using iOS 14 brings introduces its own Translate App that currently supports only 11 languages such as English, Mandarian Chinese, German, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, French, Portuguese and Russian. You can choose he language you want to speak, which language you want to be translated and then start speaking. Once you are done, Translate reads out your message  and also shows the translated text on your screen.

9. APP PERMISSION IN APP STORE:

Android has been focusing on revamping app permission over the last couple, making it more user friendly and privacy-conscious than ever before. In iOS 14 you will finally be able to see which permissions app ask for. It is a pretty basic idea, but still it was something that hasn't been offered on iOS before. Since Privacy is something Apple prides on itself, it sounds a little hilarious that it just now implementing App permission on the App Store.

10.  PASSWORD MONITORING:

Continuing its emphasis on privacy and security, iOS introduced a much more improved version of Safari on macOS Big Sur that shows privacy reports and cross-website trackers. For iOS 14 a similar feature has been introduced.

Google introduced the Password-checkup chrome extensions for desktop and then integrated it to Google Account's password manager. Later this functionality was integrated to chrome for android by the end of the last year on been showcased by Apple on iOS 14.
